YPSILANTI, MI – (UB) The University at Buffalo men’s basketball team dropped a 78-65 decision at Eastern Michigan on Saturday afternoon. Javon McCrea led three Bulls in double-figures with 17 points and added seven rebounds and a pair of steals.
Zach Filzen scored 14 points and Dave Barnett chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Eastern Michigan led for most of the first half. With the Eagles leading 29-26, McCrea scored six straight points for the Bulls and his steal and breakaway dunk gave the Bulls a 32-29 lead with 1:35 left in the half. Eastern Michigan closed the half on a 5-2 scoring run and led 35-34 at the break.
A pair of Filzen free throws gave the Bulls their only lead of the second half at 41-40. But the Eagles responded with a 10-2 scoring run to take a 51-43 lead with 13:32 remaining. A McCrea dunk with 7:35 left cut the Eagles’ advantage to 57-53, but that would be as close as the Bulls would get.
Free throw shooting was a big discrepancy in the game as the Bulls were whistled for 27 fouls compared to just 14 for the Eagles. Eastern Michigan made 24-of-35 free throws while UB made nine of their 12 attempts.
Byron Mulkey had nine points, five rebounds and seven assists for the Bulls. Mitchell Watt finished with six points. Four of his six points came on alley oop dunks.
The Bulls outrebounded the Eagles, 33-28 - marking just the second time this season they lost a game when grabbing more rebounds than their opponent.
Eastern Michigan was led by top-scorer Brandon Bowdry who had 20 points. His 13 free throw attempts were one more than the entire UB squad.
Buffalo (15-8, 7-4 MAC) will return home to host Ohio on Tuesday night at 7:30 pm at Alumni Arena.
