Report: Baron to Coach Canisius Hoops

April 1, 2012 Updated Apr 1, 2012 at 9:44 PM EDT

It looks like former Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure basketball coach Jim Baron is ready to become the new head men's basketball coach at Canisius.

CBSSports.com is reporting that Baron has decided to take the job with the Griffs.

The 58-year-old coached Rhode Island for the past 11 years. He was fired after a 7-24 campaign this season. Baron is no stranger to western New York. He spent 9 seasons leading St. Bonaventure from 1992-2001.

Canisius officials tell us they are aware of the report and had nothing to announce on Sunday evening.

Earlier this week Eyewitness Sports learned that Canisius wanted to name a new men's basketball coach by Tuesday, April 3rd.

Baron interviewed on the Canisius campus last Sunday and Monday (March 25th and 26th). He met the men's basketball team and toured the school's facilities.

Baron would replace Tom Parrotta, who spent the past six seasons with the Griffs. His contract was not renewed after a 5-25 record in 2011-12.
