South Dayton, NY (WKBW) The Pine Valley Central School District has cancelled its 2014-15 varsity football season.
District officials say the program did not have enough players on the first two days of practice to meet roster requirements for Section VI football.
The players who did attend initial practices were primarily freshmen and sophomores. This was a safety concern for the athletic department because the students would be competing against teams of primarily juniors and seniors.
The district is exploring the possibility of merging its football program with another district, as has been done in East Aurora and Holland, and in Brocton and Westfield. However, it is likely too late for a merger to save this football season, as the team's first game was coming up in the first week of September.
This is the first year in Pine Valley's history that it has cancelled a football season. In a statement, interim superintendent David F. Kurzawa said in part:
"This is a sad day for the Pine Valley community after many past years of a successful, winning program in the district."
