BUFFALO, N.Y. – In conjunction with the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the Canisius College men’s basketball team has announced its full schedule for the 2010-11 season.

“As you look at our schedule on paper, I feel this is a very competitive and balanced slate of games,” Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. “We are excited about the non-league portion because we are going to play our local rivals at home and we are going to take our team to some challenging environments on the road. The MAAC is one of the best mid-major conferences in the country each year, so you know that you need to be ready to go every time you step on the floor.”

The Golden Griffins will open the 107th season in school history Friday, Nov. 12, when the team takes on long-time rival St. Bonaventure in the second game of a basketball doubleheader with the College’s women’s program, with the men’s game set to tipoff at 8:30 p.m. After starting the season with five-straight non-league games, the Blue and Gold will begin MAAC play Friday, Dec. 3, when the team travels to meet Iona in New Rochelle, N.Y., From there, the Griffs will head to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to face off with the Marist Red Foxes, with that game being played Sunday, Dec. 5.

After closing out the majority of non-conference play through December, Canisius will start the 2011 calendar year on the road with a game at Saint Peter’s before hosting Siena (Jan. 7) and Rider (Jan. 9) in the first home MAAC games of the season. Canisius will play at Manhattan Jan. 15 and end the regular-season series with Siena Jan. 17 before returning home for a three-game MAAC homestand, which opens Friday, Jan. 21, against Fairfield in the Koessler Athletic Center.

The Iona Gaels will be in the KAC Sunday, Jan. 23 and the Blue and Gold will close out its three-game league homestand Friday, Jan. 28, when the team hosts long-time rival Niagara. The game against the Purple Eagles will be the 166th in program history, making Niagara the most common opponent on the school’s yearly schedule. The Griffs will return to the road Monday, Jan. 31, when the team plays at Fairfield in Bridgeport, Conn., and then returns to the Koessler Athletic Center to start the month of February with home dates against Marist (Feb. 4) and Saint Peter’s (Feb. 6).

The Griffs will travel to New Jersey Friday, Feb. 11, to meet Rider and then head south to Baltimore to take on Loyola Feb. 13 at 12 p.m. Canisius will make its annual trip north on I-190 to battle with Niagara on Wednesday, Feb. 16 before closing out non-conference play on the road in the ESPN BracketBuster series. The Griffs will conclude the regular season Feb. 25 and Feb. 27 when the team hosts Manhattan and Loyola before traveling to Bridgeport, Conn., for the 2011 MAAC Men’s Basketball Championships. The four-day event will run March 4-7, and the winner will earn the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.
