March 27, 2012 Updated Mar 27, 2012 at 6:57 PM EDT

BUFFALO, NY - (WKBW) Eyewitness Sports has learned that Canisius College is in the final stages of hiring a new head men's basketball coach. The school expects to announce the successor to Tom Parrotta within the next week.

A Canisius official also tells Eyewitness Sports Reporter Shawn Stepner that the only candidate to have an on-campus interview for the Griffs vacant job has been former St. Bonaventure and Rhode Island head coach Jim Baron. Baron's interview began Sunday night and included meeting players on the men's basketball team. It then lasted into Monday when he toured the Canisius campus and facilities. The 58-year-old was fired as head coach of Rhode Island earlier this month after 11 seasons. He coached at St. Bonaventure for nine seasons before leading the Rams.

At least two more candidates are scheduled for on-campus interviews at Canisius. The Griffs expect to name a new head coach within the next seven days.

Former Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta was fired on March 4th after six seasons on Main Street.
