Sabres shrug off slow start, rally in Montreal

Montreal (WKBW.com) The Buffalo Sabres fought back from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 in a shootout on Monday night. The victory put the Sabres back atop the Northeast Division standings at 11-6 on the year.



The Sabres entered the third period trailing 2-0 but clawed their way back. Derek Roy set up Jason Pominville for the captains 7th goal of the season just :53 seconds into the third to cut the Canadiens lead to 2-1. Then at the 12:30 mark Roy would tie things up with his 6th of the year beating Carey Price after a nifty play.



Thomas Vanek and Brad Boyes scored in the shootout for the Sabres. Jhonas Enroth then stopped Brian Gionta to secure the victory.



Montreal broke a scoreless tie in the second period. Erik Cole beat Enroth on the power play for the 1-0 lead at 3:58. Max Pacioretty then gave the Canadiens a 2-0 lead with his 8th goal of the season at 14:17 of the second.



The Sabres host New Jersey on Wednesday.
