Buffalo (WKBW.com) The Detroit Red Wings scored three first period goals and never looked back as they knocked off the Buffalo Sabres 4-1 on Friday night. It was the Sabres third loss in the last four games.
The Sabres were finally able to beat Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard in the third period. Jason Pominville set up Jochen Hecht during a 2-on-1 break for Buffalos lone goal. Howard had 27 saves on the night.
The Sabres were also unable to convert on the power play, going 0-4 on the night with the man advantage.
Sabres forward Nathan Gerbe was cut in the face during the third period. Gerbe was clipped by Paul Gaustad's skate during a face-off. He left the game and did not return. Head Coach Lindy Ruff said after the game that Gerbe was cut from nose to lip during the scary accident.
Jakub Kindl, Johan Franzen and Valtteri Filppula scored in the first period for Detroit. Pavel Datsyuk added an empty net goal late in the third.
The Sabres travel to Nashville on Saturday.
