Buffalo (WKBW.com) Jason Pominville scored :56 seconds into overtime to push the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night. The win moved the Sabres into a tie with Washington for 9th place in the Eastern Conference and two points out of the 8th and final playoff spot .
The win wasn't easy. The Sabres had to climb out of an early 1-0 hole.
Carolina defenseman Jaroslav Spacek scored his 4th goal of the season at 2:47 of the first period. But the Sabres would respond early in the second.
The Sabres used two goals in a :40 second span in the second period to take the teams first lead of the night. Tyler Myers scored his 7th of the season just :22 seconds into the period. Thomas Vanek scored his 23rd goal on the power play at the 1:02 mark of the frame. Vanek was camped out in front where after several chances he finally pushed it past Cam Ward.
Chad LaRose would tie the game for Carolina with a goal at 5:11 of the second LaRose directed his 13th goal of the season off his skate and past Ryan Miller to tie the game at 2.
The Sabres have 15 games left on the schedule. The team traveled to Boston on Wednesday night and will take on the Bruins on Thursday.
