UNIONDALE, NY (WKBW) Michael Grabner's goal with 3:03 remaining in regulation lifted the Islanders over the Sabres on Saturday night 4-2. Buffalo has now lost eight straight road games.
The Sabres had a chance to tie the game when Thomas Vanek was awarded a penalty shot with 1:24 remaining. However, Vanek's shot hit the post. Grabner then scored his second goal of the game on an empty-netter.
The Islanders opened the scoring with Matt Moulson's goal in the first period.
Patrick Kaleta tipped in a Mike Weber shot to tie the game in the second period.
New York's Kyle Okposo put the home team back in front by converting a two-on-one a short time later.
Derek Roy knotted the game at two before the horn would sound to end the frame.
Grabner's late goals were the difference in the final period.
Jhonas Enroth made 36 saves for the Sabres. Evgeni Nabokov stopped 23 shots for the Islanders.
Buffalo defenseman Robyn Regehr left the game with an upper-body injury. Sabres Head Coach Lindy Ruff says the veteran will miss "a little bit of time".
Buffalo's second game of their seven-game road trip is on Monday in Detroit.
