WASHINGTON, DC - (WKBW) Three quick second-period strikes by the Washington Capitals lifted them past the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night. The Sabres lost 5-3.
Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring just 19-seconds into the first period when his snapshot beat Ryan Miller following a Caps faceoff win.
Buffalo's Cody Hodgson tied the game 12-seconds into the second period.
Washington then followed with three goals in 5:22. Troy Brouwer (power play), Jason Chimera and Marcus Johansson made the score 4-1 Capitals.
Brian Flynn tallied his third goal of the season to draw Buffalo within two.
Hodgson converted a Tyler Ennis pass for a power play goal in the third period to make the score 4-3.
Mathieu Perreault scored for the Caps with under five minutes to play to again give Washington a two-goal lead.
The Sabres next visit Montreal on Tuesday.
