Buffalo (WKBW.com) Forward Cody McCormick led the way with his fists and his stick, and the Buffalo Sabres picked up an important two points with a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday.
The win pulled the Sabres within 5 points of the Hurricanes for 9th place in the Eastern Conference, and within 8 points of the 8th and final playoff spot.
McCormick continued his strong play for the Sabres in the victory. He sparked some life into a scoreless first period when he fought the Hurricanes Troy Brodie. He also broke a 1-1 tie in the second period, with his second goal in as many games.
Nathan Gerbe got the Sabres on the board in the first period, taking a pass from Thomas Vanek and beating Cam Ward for his second goal of the season. Drew Stafford picked up his 15th goal of the year on the power play in the third, which would go down as the game winning goal.
The Hurricanes Tuomo Rutuu tied the game at one in the second with a power play goal, his 12th goal of the season. Jeff Skinner added a goal with 32 seconds left to play in the game.
Ryan Miller had 27 saves in the victory. The Sabres head to Long Island to take on the Islanders on Saturday.
