(WKBW.com) Sabres great Gilbert Perreault says he learned of the loss of former teammate Rick Martin from "French Connection" linemate Rene Robert. "Rene called me and told me today. It's a shock."
Perreault spoke with Eyewitness Sports Director Jeff Russo from his home in Victoriaville on Sunday night. The former Sabres great says he spent Sunday morning recounting his time with Martin during the recent reunion of the "French Connection" to welcome in new owner Terry Pegula.
"I was looking at the ceremony this morning at 11:30 with my younger son. Two hours later Rene called and told me that Rick had passed away. I couldn't believe it. " said Perreault. "We had a lot of fun (at the reunion). We were really happy. We went on the ice. I didn't know it was going to be the last time."
Perreault then talked about the "French Connection" and what Martin meant to the famous line. "I was with Rick for 10 years in Buffalo, 7 years on the same line. We had some great times together. He was a tremendous hockey player and had that quick release. He knew where the net was. "
