Buffalo (WKBW) Toronto Blue Jays OF MELKY CABRERA and RHP SERGIO SANTOS are both scheduled to join the Bisons on MLB injury rehabilitation assignments today. Both players will be in uniform as the Bisons begin the second half of their season tonight against the Toledo Mud Hens at Coca-Cola Field (7:05 p.m.).
Cabrera has been on the Blue Jays disabled list since June 27 with left knee tendinitis. Cabrera began his MLB injury rehab assignment on July 12 with two games for Single-A Dunedin of the Florida State League and two more with Double-A New Hampshire. Combined, the outfielder has averaged .231 (3-13) with a home run and two RBI. Cabrera hit .278 (86-309) with 13 doubles, three home runs and 29 RBI in 78 games with the Blue Jays before the injury.
Cabrera was signed by the Blue Jays this off-season after hitting .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBI in 113 games with the San Francisco Giants in 2012. He was the Most Valuable Player of the 2012 MLB All-Star Game with a two-run home run (2-3 in the game) in the game played in Kansas City.
The Blue Jays placed Santos on the disabled list on April 15 (retroactive to April 14) with a right triceps strain. He pitched five games with Toronto to start the season, recording a 2.08 ERA in 4.1 innings of work (6 SO) before the injury. Santos returned to action on July 3rd for one game with the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays. In five games from July 5-15 with Single-A Dunedin, the righty posted a 5.79 ERA in 4.2 innings of work (4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 SO).
Santos was limited to six games during the 2012 season with right shoulder inflammation that required surgery on July 25. In earned two saves and posted a 9.00 ERA in 5.0 innings of work (4 SO).
