TC Notes 8/14 - Kolb to start against Vikings

Pittsford (WKBW) Kevin Kolb is back, and so is the open competition at quarterback. Bills Head Coach Doug Marrone announced on Wednesday that Kolb will not only play against the Minnesota Vikings, he'll get the start on Friday at Ralph Wilson Stadium

"The one thing I hope everyone understands is not to read into this", said Marrone. "We were very, very happy with EJ's performance in the first game. As a matter of fact what we were looking at if Kevin was healthy he would have started the first game and EJ start this game. They are in a competition and we just switched it.", Marrone continued.

Coming off the knee injury Kolb understands that he's playing catch-up. The veteran also realizes that with Manuel's performance against the Colts he needs to make good on the opportunity against the Vikings.

"Obviously a big one.", said Kolb. "We've had a lot of shots starting back in OTAs obviously it picks up and goes from here. I just think you can't focus on that stuff, have to focus on what to do as a quarterback, how do I get better.", Kolb continued.

Manuel says he wasn't surprised at the news. Says he'll prepare as if he's the starter and be ready when his number is called on Friday.
"I wasn't going to be a bad teammate about it or anything like that.", said Manuel Coach is going to make the decisions. He made the call and that's what it is.", said Manuel.

I will give Marrone this. He said it was an open competition and he's sticking to his word. I still believe it's Manuel's job to lose and have no problem with Kolb getting his shot. Players also respect the approach. Fred Jackson told me he appreciated the "may the best man win" approach.

-Other Notes

-Wide Receiver Stevie Johnson tested his hamstring with some work in individual drills on Wednesday but then shut it down. He will not play on Friday against the Vikings. Told me that he'd put his hamstring at 70-75%, wouldn't rule out a return against Washington. Why risk it?

-LB Kiko Alonso was held out of practice on Wednesday. He has been nursing a sore shoulder. He's been cleared but will not play on Friday for precautionary reasons.

-Marquise Goodwin continues to impress. The rookie WR hauled in a pair of catches across the middle, turned on the jets, and rolled for long gains and a would be touchdown. He's been fun to watch, told me he can't wait to hit the field in front of the home fans on Friday.
