Bills GM Buddy Nix Speaks Out

July 29, 2011 Updated Jul 29, 2011 at 11:09 PM EDT

PITTSFORD, NY ( WKBW ) Buffalo Bills General Manager Buddy Nix speaks out on the state of the team on day one of training camp.

Channel 7's Eyewitness Sports Director Jeff Russo with anchor/reporter Shawn Stepner will be at camp with complete coverage.

On Drayton Florence:
We needed Drayton (Florence) back, were actually pretty deep back there now and with his experience, he gives us that veteran leadership. We are happy to have him back.

On if it is easier to sign rookies with the new salary structure:
So far it has been. It’s been a strain on our cap guys and contract guys. No team has enough staff to take care of what we have been doing in the last 4-5 days. So it’s really been a struggle when you try to sign 20 undrafted free agents and drafted guys and any UFA from other teams, it overloads you.

On everyone being signed besides Sheppard and a deal was close with him:
At the moment he is the only unsigned draft pick. I have no idea if it’s close. They tell me if there is a problem or they tell me when we sign him.

On the loss of Posluszny:
We’re excited about the guys we have. Poz (Posluszny) is gone, obviously we tried to keep him but he is gone and I haven’t given it much thought since then.

On which player he is excited about at inside linebacker:
We have three young guys in there and two veterans with Andra Davis and Reggie (Torbor), but the three young guys, of course two drafted guys Chris White and Kelvin Sheppard, and were working (Arthur) Moats in there right now. I wouldn’t want somebody to take snaps away from them, I want them to progress along with our team, were pretty young anyway and we want to move forward with those guys.

On if Moats will play inside all year:
I don’t know if you can do that with a young guy, so we will give him some work in there and see how he is doing, if we were to move him it would be permanent.

On if they are not in the market for a free agent inside linebacker:
No I wouldn’t say that, here is what we do. Everyday our pro department will take the waiver wire, go through it and grade everybody with a one liner on them. Then we will sit down and discuss every one of them. If there is a guy there at linebacker that we think can help us we will try to get him.

On if anybody on the waiver wire jumps out at him:
The waiver wire just came out, give me a chance - this is still only the first day, but there are some guys. Everybody thought the money was going to flowing but we have been getting calls from guys that started out high priced guys that are now saying just make us an offer. I think there will be some guys that could give us some competition and depth. I think the big word right now is patience; we need to not jump on the first thing. We need to be thorough and evaluate them as they come out.

On if the free agents feel the pinch of time:
I feel like there is a lot of urgency on their part. Their agents are just trying to get through to teams to get something done and they can’t get through to them. There are a lot of educated people that thought this was going to be a boom town.

On if tackle is a position of need:
I feel if the guy can upgrade us and he’s a good player we will go after him. Nobody is safe, if a guy can help us we will go get him and let him compete for the job.

On Dareus wanting to be here from day one:
He was excited about getting it signed. Anytime you have a first rounder sign before any other round draft pick it tells you something about them. I think that class had several of those, Cam Newton is that way, Von Miller signed early. That group, sitting out may have made them more anxious to get in.

On Florence and Thigpen not being able to come until August 4th:
They can come, they are here. They can go to meetings and work out on their own, but nothing team-wise.

On if there was a chance the August 4th date could be moved up:
I believe the rule states, no later then.

On if the Bills had the vote to ratify yet:
They did, but they didn’t come ask me about that - no. Everyone that voted before us, it passed unanimously so I would expect it to pass.

On what Marcell Dareus brings to this football team:
I watched him out there today and it’s amazing how big these guys are and how well they move. He gives us a pass rusher, plus he is a guy that can help us shore up the run game.

On if this team is in better shape than the team last year at this time:
Absolutely, I don’t know of any place that we are not better. Even if it is the same guy - with more experience in what we are doing. We wanted to get bigger, we knew we were not big enough to sit in there and play with these guys and if you watched these guys today, we got bigger. Whether we can play or not, I know we are bigger.
