Orchard Park (WKBW) The Buffalo Bills announced on Monday that the team has released Strong Safety George Wilson and Linebacker Nick Barnett.

The popular veteran leaders were both entering the final year of their contracts.

“Moves like the ones we’ve made today are never easy, but we have to do what’s best for our team and keep moving forward.", said Bills GM Buddy Nix in a statement. " We’ve got some good young players on our roster who we feel are ready to take the next step and they will now have the opportunity to do so. We thank both Nick and George for everything they’ve given the Bills organization and wish them nothing but the best for the future.” , said Nix.

Wilson joined the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2004. He took over as the starter at strong safety in 2008 after being a key performer on special teams. Wilson served as a captain in 2012.

Barnett led the Bills in tackles in 2012 serving as the teams weakside linebacker in the 4-3. Barnett signed with the Bills as a free agent prior to the 2011 season.

Barnett reacted to the news Monday via twitter saying. "I was told I'll be released today by the Buffalo Bills. Thanks to all the great Fans and friends I have met in Western New York. It was truly a pleasure being apart of that organization and culture."
