Buffalo (WKBW) The Buffalo Bills ended the preseason with a thud on Thursday night. Resting almost all of the teams starters the Bills were run off the field by the Detroit Lions in 35-13 loss at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
Adding to the down night were injuries to WR Brad Smith (ribs) and Guard Doug Legursky who suffered a knee injury. Legursky had to be carted off the field and Head Coach Doug Marrone said afterwards the injury "didn't look good". Marrone also revealed after the game that safety Jairus Byrd was not with the team in Orchard Park on Thursday. Byrd went to visit a specialist to get a second opinion for soreness in his foot.
Undrafted free agent Jeff Tuel did not play Thursday against the Lions. so newly added QB Matt Leinart got the start. The former first round pick struggled through his Bills debut. Working mostly with second and third team players Leinart finished the night 3-of-10 passing for 11 yards and threw a pair of interceptions. Both interceptions came deep in Buffalo territory and resulted in Detroit touchdowns.
Thad Lewis, acquired in a trade earlier in the week, entered the game in the second quarter to face his former team. Lewis finished the night 7 of 16 for 132 yards. He also threw a 79 yard TD to Marcus Easley.
Meanwhile the Lions backup quarterbacks had a field day on the Buffalo secondary. Both Kellen Moore and Shaun Hill threw for multiple touchdowns. The Bills have a need at cornerback with star Stephon Gilmore out 6-8 weeks with a fractured wrist but the candidates to fill the void did little to impress. Crezdon Butler and TJ Heath both started for the Bills at corner. Both struggled in coverage. Both were beaten for touchdowns.
The Lions also took advantage of a Bills turnover on special teams. Nickell Robey muffed a punt late in the second quarter and it was recovered by Detroit's Michael Spurlock on the Buffalo 10. Three plays later Kellen Moore found Theo Riddick for the 4 yard touchdown. The Lions led 35-3 at the half.
Looking for a highlight?? Roster hopeful Marcus Easley may have pushed himself into the roster. The wide receiver hauled in a 79-yard touchdown grab from Lewis in the fourth quarter. Easley finished with 2 catches for 84 yards. Also Linebacker Marcus Dowtin got the start at SLB and had a solid showing. Dowtin had an interception, a pass deflection, and two tackles in the first half. He also provide solid pressure in the pass rush early and often against the Lions.
