Pittsford, NY (WKBW.com) It started as a day of cutting ties for the Buffalo Bills. Following an off-season of indecision for Aaron Schobel, the team released the veteran on Wednesday afternoon. The move allows Schobel to sign else here if he decides to play in 2010. Bills General Manager Buddy Nix talked to Eyewitness Sports about the decision to release Schobel.
"I think we obviously thought about it a lot ." said Nix prior to Wednesday's night practice. "We wanted to do what was best for us first, and then Aaron. To keep him from having to make a trip to Buffalo and walk in and say I'm ready to play, and then we say "you're released", we just cut all ties and released him, and now if he gets a chance to play somewhere else he's free to do that."

Bills Head Coach Chan Gailey gave his players the morning off, but had his team back on the field for a night workout at Growney Stadium. It was a practice dominated by the defense.

Bills safety Donte Whitner set the tone with a nice hit on running back Fred Jackson during team drills. In another highlight, safety Bryan Scott came up with an interception of Ryan Fitzpatrick. QB Trent Edwards struggled to find consistency on Wednesday night, on a disappointing evening for the Bills passing game.
"Obviously I thought the defense dominated out there tonight.", said Gailey. "I thought especially in the pass game they made it very tough to throw the football and on one front that’s very encouraging and on the other front it’s very discouraging."

"You’re going to have practices like that." said Trent Edwards. "We have to find a way to make plays. It comes down to lining up and beating the guy across from you and we didn’t do that tonight. You’re going to have games like that and you’re going to have practices like that. But you have to find a way to fight through that. You can’t keep doing that, you can’t keep making mistakes over and over again and that’s what I felt like we were doing tonight. It starts with me at the quarterback position. I need to make sure that I’m picking my teammates up, that I’m doing my job every single play and I have to find a way to fix that.

While the passing game struggled, the ground game tried to pick up the slack. Backups Chad Simpson and Joique Bell led the way. Both took advantage of their reps on Wednesday with several nice runs, making the most of the extra touches with first round pick CJ Spiller still holding out.

The Bills have one practice scheduled on Thursday starting at 3pm.
