Bills Training Camp Thursday Night Quotes

August 4, 2011 Updated Aug 4, 2011 at 11:51 PM EDT

PITTSFORD, NY - (Bills Release) Below are quotes from Thursday night's Bills practice:

Head Coach Chan Gailey

PM Practice – August 4, 2011

On DL Marcell Dareus’ injury during practice:

We just held him out for precautious reasons. He just tweaked something and we wanted to hold him out the rest of practice. We’ll get him back tomorrow.

On WR David Nelson’s injury:

He had trouble breathing for a minute or two so they went to calm him down inside and we just kept him in there. I think he’ll be fine.

On getting all the players on the field for the first time:

It was great to see everybody and most everybody made some kind of play out there which was great. It was good to see those guys. I didn’t see much of (Nick) Barnett as I was watching the offense; I’ll have to go watch him on film. It looked like he got around the ball a couple of times. (Drayton) Florence made a play or two, I saw that. I thought (Tyler) Thigpen did some nice things for not ever having taken a snap in our offense. It was good.

On QB Tyler Thigpen:

We’re trying to get him ready to play. I think I know exactly what he’s capable of. We just need to get him enough reps and he’ll get there.

On TE Scott Chandler:

He’s a big guy, a huge target. We’ve got to try to get him involved down there because of his size. I hope he’s a good blocker. He showed flashes of it last year. Consistency is a factor in this game. You got to have consistency and we’ll see how he does the rest of camp.

On the tight end situation:

(David) Martin had a little something with his toe that’s going to take him a day or so. It’s really no big deal, he’ll be back.

On the addition of WR Craig Davis:

Craig has a ton of ability but he’s just never really done it. He’s worth taking a look at to see if he can do something special. He’s really an extremely talented young man.

On how it felt having the free agent signings not being able to practice until tonight:

That was very unusual. I’ve not been through that one either. There’s a lot of firsts this year.

On how the red zone drills went:

It’s just like most practices. There was some good and there was some bad. We had a couple of really bad plays on offense and some really bad plays on defense, but then great plays going both ways. You have to eliminate the awful plays and keep the great plays. That’s what you have to do.

LB Nick Barnett

PM Practice – August 4, 2011

On how it felt to get out there and mix it up with the guys:

It felt good. Obviously it is the first day for me and I was definitely rusty. I was trying to think too much but I just have to continue to work and get it down to get a little more comfortable.

On if the system is different:

The system isn’t different but the terminology is different. You just have to stay in the book and understand it. They had a good four days on me so I just have to stay studying and I’ll be out there ready to go.

On if jumping in the first day of practice in pads knocks the dust off:

Yeah pretty quick. I didn’t mind the pads so much; conditioning was fine. When you’re out there and you got the pads on and you tried to think about the new defense, you get a little discombobulated. Other than that I thought I felt pretty good out there running and tackling.

On playing a lot of nickel coverage tonight:

Yeah definitely a lot of different coverage’s, we went three, one, two. I got hit with the fire today, which is fine because I’m a vet and I know the coverage’s but it’s just the terminology. I just need to stay working hard and we will get it.

On how the communication is going inside:

For right now Reggie (Torbor) and Andra (Davis) are making the calls and targeting everything down.

On the difference between Packers training camp and Bills training camp:

It’s too soon, I’m only in day one of this training camp. It is training camp though. Training camp is training camp but you get a feel for the players as time goes on. Right now we’re at the beginning and it is too early to make predictions and judgments. We just have to continue to work.

QB Tyler Thigpen

PM Practice – August 4, 2011

On if it felt good getting out there tonight:

It did. There were some parts where I was getting a little rust off. It’s been about seven months since I’ve put the shoulder pads and helmet on. There are some things that I can learn from. I’m definitely excited to get in there to the film room tomorrow.

On the calls coming easy to him in the huddle:

Yeah pretty easy for the most part. I think I stumbled on a couple of them but for the most part I felt pretty comfortable in there. I felt comfortable making the ‘Mike’ calls and calling out protections and things like that. I look forward to the next day to build on something new each and every day.

On making check calls at the line:

Yeah it’s one of those things that Chan feels confident in me that I know the offense well enough to come out here and make those calls. That is five days in the classroom. You know what to do and you just have to come out here and apply them on the field.

On not having a lot of time to prepare for the first preseason game:

I’ll definitely be ready. That is one of those things that you have to be a professional and whatever you have to do off the field, whether it is staying after practice and working with guys, you have to do it.
