Bills GM Buddy Nix On Lee Evans

August 12, 2011 Updated Aug 12, 2011 at 5:37 PM EDT

The Buffalo Bills GM speaks out on the decision to trade the wide receiver. Channel 7 is "Your Official Station Of The Buffalo Bills"

On the decision to trade WR Lee Evans:

If you combine the player and the person you’d be hard pressed to find someone who has represented the Bills better than him. He did a lot for this organization and this community. To answer the question of why the trade, we have six or seven really promising young receivers. We’d like to see those guys develop, and we want to give them that opportunity.

On the interest in Evans from other teams:

There was a lot of interest in Lee and you could understand why. He’s a good player and has done a lot of really good things here. He’ll add to Baltimore. I think it’s a good opportunity for him. They’ve got a one receiver (Anquan Boldin) and he’ll probably move right in. They have a good team. Ozzie Newsome and I go back years and Cam Cameron and I worked together. I think it’s a great opportunity for Lee also.

On how long a trade was in the works:

Every day we try to see what we think might give us a little bit of an edge or a boost. When that presents itself that’s what we’re going to do. It’s not easy. It’s the hard part of the job, but nothing lasts forever.

On if the young receivers have proven themselves:

We’ll see. You don’t know that and neither do I. We think they have the potential to do it and some of them have already started doing it. So we’ll see where it goes.

On the number of receivers on the roster:

Unless somebody got hurt you were going to have a good player that you were going to have to let go.

On if he’s sending a message to the team:

I’m not trying to send them any message. I’m trying to get better. That’s the whole message from me.

On a message to the fans and their interest in the trade:

I’m sure they are. They’ll be about half of them like it and half that won’t. That’s the way most of all the decisions are.
