EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (WKBW) - The Bills first road trip of the season turned into a nightmare for EJ Manuel and his team. The Bills suffered their second division loss of 2013 on Sunday, falling 27-20 to the New York Jets.
Rookie quarterback Geno Smith capped the opening drive of the ballgame with an eight-yard touchdown run.
Dan Carpenter kicked two field goals in the second quarter to pull Buffalo within a point.
Smith hooked up with Stephen Hill later in the quarter for a 51-yard touchdown connection. Hill beat Bills cornerback Justin Rogers on the play. Rogers was replacing Leodis McKelvin, who suffered a hamstring injury.
The Jets took a 17-6 lead into the halftime locker room following Nick Folk's 34-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter.
After Folk added a field goal in the third frame, Carpenter added two more field goals to cut the Buffalo deficit to 20-12.
The Bills once again came up with some fourth quarter magic when Manuel found Scott Chandler for a 33-yard touchdown. Stevie Johnson added a two-point conversion catch from Manuel to knot the game at 20 with 10:39 to play in regulation.
However the Jets responded on their next possession. Santonio Holmes beat Rogers to haul in a 69-yard TD to put an end to the scoring.
Manuel was sacked eight times.
The Bills' Jim Leonhard and Kiko Alonso registered interceptions.
Along with McKelvin, C.J. Spiller (knee), Marcell Dareus (ankle) and Alex Carrington (knee) suffered injuries and did not return to the game.
