Head Coach Chan Gailey
PM Practice – August 25, 2011
On rookie DE Marcell Dareus’s status:
He’s going to be alright and we’ll see if we can get him ready for the game. He’s got a pretty good chance to be ready for the game. He got kicked in the calf. There’s no such thing as a freak play in football like that. All of those things happen from time to time, as it has probably happened somewhere before. But it’s on the other leg than the one he hurt. I think he’s going to be fine. It’s more bruised than anything.
On LB Shawne Merriman’s status:
We haven’t decided yet. As we’ve said all along our goal is to get him ready for September 11th, not for this game necessarily.
On how valuable the reps are for Dareus in this upcoming game:
These reps are big for all of the young players and they’re big for our team. We’re going to play the longest our starters have played and will play before we get to the first ball game.
On if rookie LB Kelvin Sheppard showed him enough this week to get him in the game:
That’s something that we are going to look at. I don’t know if he’ll make it but we’re going to give him a shot at it.
On if he thought it was important to get the guys out on the new turf before they played on it:
I think it’s important to come out here and get a feel for it. It’s different. I think it was good to get them out here and at least the first time they see it they won’t be looking around. They can go through their normal pre-game.
On who will start at left tackle:
Demetrius (Bell) is going to start at left tackle and then we’ll just rotate in.
On what the situation at running back is:
We have two great players. I’m not saying anything because I don’t want Kansas City to know. It’s not for you guys. I know what’s going to happen but I’m not saying it because I don’t want Kansas City to know. We’ve got two great players.
On OL Ed Wang’s status:
Ed got a pretty good hit on his shoulder. He’s going to be out a few days. I don’t think he’s going to make this game.
On LB Reggie Torbor:
With Reggie, it’s a lot worse than we thought. Actually we put Reggie on IR today. It’s tough for him and it’s and it’s tough for us. Reggie Torbor was a strong person on our football team and we’re going to miss him but it’s just one of those things. We evaluated it the last couple of days and that’s the situation.
On if LB Kirk Morrison has signed:
We’ve got nothing official.
LB Shawne Merriman
On how he likes the new turf field:
I like it. I didn’t get a chance to play on it last year. But sometime in the middle of the season I came out and it’s a lot different than it was and a lot better I think.
On how he feels:
I feel pretty good. I missed a few days of practice. My groin has been a little tight over the last few days, so it’s just been precautionary to make sure everything is good.
On if he will play this Saturday:
Hopefully, I always want to play. At the same time I have to think of what’s in the best interest for the team. You don’t want to be put in a position to jeopardize anything.
On if he feels like he’s balancing being ready for September 11th and not pushing too hard:
It’s a constant reminder that I’ve been off some time and it’s going to take me a little bit of time to get back into it. The coaching staff and training staff are doing a great job and I’ll deal with those everyday reminders.
On if he’s concerned that these nagging issues will hold him back from playing Week One:
I’m fully confident. I expected some of these things to happen from not being back in so long. Just getting back into these football positions and motions you’re going have some things that get a little tight and sore over the course of time. I just have to take care of it.
On if he knows LB Kirk Morrison and his thoughts are about him:
Yes, I know him well. I was talking to him for about a week or two, same as how I was talking to Nick (Barnett). Bottom line, I want to win and I think we all want to win. We know we have guys here who can play so to get a guy like Nick and to get a guy like Kirk, and come out with that much experience to help us get to where we want to go.
On if he trained with Morrison:
We trained for seven weeks over the offseason with a lot of UFC guys. So I know he’s been working, I know he’s in great shape. He gets in some time this afternoon so we’ll have to see him then. Just to get him on film and gel together to get this thing going.
On what kind of player Morrison is and what kind of contributions he can make:
For one, he’s a veteran. He’s a guy that’s only missed one start. He’s pretty much always on the field and can always be a contribution to us.
DE Marcell Dareus
PM Practice – August 25, 2011
On his injury update:
I’m fine. It’s just precautionary. I just want to take it easy. I tweaked my ankle a little bit. I don’t want to take any chances. I just want to relax, do some treatment and ice it up. I’m just being safe.
On how the injury happened:
I got kicked in the back of the leg on a play. We were both taking inside moves and I got kicked in the calf. So, we’re just getting it together.
On if he’ll play Saturday:
I think I’m going to play but we won’t know until that day.
