BUFFALO (WKBW/UB Release) Coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history, the University at Buffalo football team announced its opponents for the 2014 season on Tuesday and, for the first time in school history, the Bulls will play seven home games. In addition, UB has announced that award-winning recording artists Easton Corbin, Joe Nichols and the Spin Doctors will headline the wildly popular UB Football Tailgate Concert Series.
The 2014 season kicks off on Aug. 30 against Duquesne at UB Stadium. After a road trip to Army on Sept. 6, the Bulls will host defending Big XII champion Baylor on Sept 13. The Bulls will round out non-conference play against Norfolk State on Sept. 20. In Mid-American Conference action, the Bulls will face Akron, Kent State, Miami (OH) and Central Michigan at home and will travel to Bowling Green, Ohio, UMass and Eastern Michigan. The MAC will release conference game dates at a later point.
Back for a second season is the UB Football Tailgate Concert Series at Stampede Square and rising country star Easton Corbin will kick things off on Aug. 30 before the Bulls host FCS power, Duquesne. Corbin has produced two number one country hits and his most recent album, "All Over The Road", peaked at number two on the Billboard charts following its release in September of 2012. Corbin was named the New/Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the 2010 American Country Awards.
Another country star will take over the stage at Stampede Square on September 13, as Joe Nichols will perform pregame before the Bulls host national-power Baylor. Nichols most recent single, "Sunny and 75," reached number one on the Country Airplay chart in December of 2013 and was certified gold by the RIAA for single sales in excess of 500,000 digital downloads.
On September 20, '90s alternative rockers the Spin Doctors will entertain the crowd before the Bulls take on Norfolk State. The Spin Doctors have produced six studio albums including the five-time platinum album, "Pocket Full of Kryptonite," which reached number three on the charts. Their two hits, "Two Princes" and "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong," peaked on the Billboard Top 100 at seven and 17, respectively.
Since being hired, UB Athletic Director Danny White has emphasized building a vibrant tailgate atmosphere at UB Stadium. Fans responded in 2013, as UB led the Mid-American Conference in attendance and set a school-record with a total paid attendance of 136,428 – nearly 30,000 more than the previous mark.
"It was great to see the Western New York community rally around our football team last year and show the support that they did," White said. "We believe our game day entertainment rivals any school in the country and its just another step in building America's next big-time college athletics program. We are already excited for the 2014 season."
The UB football team had one of its finest seasons in school history in 2013. The Bulls won eight games, including a best ever 6-2 record in MAC play. In addition, UB was invited to play in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, just the team's second ever bowl appearance.
UB will announce the musical acts for the remaining four home games once they are finalized.
