Pittsford (WKBW) Bills Training Camp 2013 started with Mario Williams nursing an injury. The defensive end was held out of team drills for the first practice because of a sore foot.

"Mario reported to our athletic training staff he had a sore foot.", said Bills Head Coach Doug Marrone on Sunday night. "So what we want to do, we wanted to make sure we decided the hold him out of practice and let our medical staff evaluate him" continued Marrone.

Marrone would not disclose what foot was ailing Williams. He did not set a timetable for Williams return to full practice."It is not a disappointment from a standpoint of I wish the player was out here for the rest of the team, it is more of a disappointment for the individual", said Marrone. "Mario has put in a lot of hard work and has really went in the playbook, did a lot of work this offseason, so I always have initially the disappointment for the player because I think we tend to forget how much work they put in and you have a player that definitely wants to be out there.", Marrone continued.

Other notes from the first practice-

- Bills Rookie QB EJ Manuel worked through his training camp practice at the competition at the position officially got underway against veteran Kevin Kolb. Both ran with the first unit on Sunday with Kolb getting s few extra reps. Neither QB addressed the media following practice but head coach Doug Marrone had this to say about his signal callers

"Thr quarterbacks, we’re working EJ (Manuel) in, get the reps to 50-50. I think it’s the same as everything else, I don’t mean to be cliché about it, but there was some good things in it. Again, this is the first time throwing to receivers in a period of time. We have to work on our timing. We had a lot of work pre-practice before we got in to the teamwork. Again, we’re going to have to do a better job, both in our receiving, throwing, protecting. Just work to get better."

- Both QBs had ups and downs. Both had errant throws and were intercepted. The highlights for Kolb included a pair of nice passes to Kevin Elliott. Kolb also hit TE Scott Chandler with a sharp pass to the sideline. Manuel showed his touch on the deep ball. The rookie hit second year WR on a pair of deep throws during passing drills. Manuels footwork and his ability to pick up the offense will be key over the next couple weeks. Marrone says he'd like to make a decision at QB within 10-12 days remaining before the season opener. There is a long way to go in the battle of camp.

-I was impressed once again by how energetic and hands on this coaching staff is. Marrone spent the first couple of periods of practice working closely with the offensive line. He dove right into the drills physically showing linemen on several reps. He said before camp started that he was a stickler for the little things and was quick to call players on technique specifically too much wind up in the arms on punch in blocking drills. Offensive coordinator Nate Hackett was also very animated on several occasions during practice.

- A packed crowd at Growney Stadium watched as the Bills opened the teams 14th season of camp at St. John Fisher College. Bills president Russ Brandon, GM Doug Whaley and Buddy Nix were all in attendance.
Camp continues with an afternoon workout on Monday
