BUFFALO, N.Y. – Canisius College men’s basketball player Isaac Sosa (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday, the MAAC office announced. This is the first time Sosa has earned the conference’s player of the week accolades and he is the second Golden Griffin to receive the honor this year, joining junior guard Billy Baron, who has received the award two times this year.
Sosa scored a season-high 25 points on Thursday against Manhattan and then he followed that effort with a game-high 18 points Saturday against Siena as the Golden Griffins went 2-0 last week to move to 5-3 in MAAC play for the first time since 1997-98. The senior co-captain averaged a team-best 21.5 points per game to go with 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 0.5 steals per game, while shooting 58.3 percent from the field, 47.4 percent from 3-point range and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line. He hit five 3-pointers in the win over Manhattan and drained four more shots from long range against Siena, giving him three more makes from behind the arc in 12 of the team’s last 13 ball contests.
Sosa ranks third on the team and 13th in the league with his 12.7 points per game scoring average and he has drilled a team-high 59 3-point field goals through 19 games this season. His 3.1 3-pointers per game ranks second in the league and 18th in the country, and his 43.4 percent effort from 3-point land this year ranks fourth in the MAAC and 24th nationally.
Canisius is 12-7 overall and 5-3 in MAAC play after beating Siena 76-44 Jan. 19, the program’s biggest MAAC regular-season victory since Feb. 8, 1997 when the Griffs defeated Fairfield 91-45. The Blue and Gold will play at Rider Jan. 25, before returning home to take on long-time rival Niagara Sunday, Jan. 27 in the Koessler Athletic Center. That game will tipoff at 4 p.m., and we be broadcast live on ESPN3.
