Glendale (WKBW) Zemgus Girgensons scored the game winner shorthanded in the third period as the Buffalo Sabres rallied to beat the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 on Thursday night.
The Sabres were on the penalty kill in the third period following a slashing penalty to forward Cody Hodgson when Girgensons struck for his fifth goal of the season. Working hard in the Coyotes zone Brian Flynn put a couple of chances on net when Girgensons skated into the play to beat Phoenix goaltender Thomas Greiss for the 3-2 lead. The goal would be the difference as the Sabres picked up only the teams second win in nine games.
Tyler Ennis opened the scoring for the Sabres in the first period before the Coyotes answered with two quick goals. Antoine Vermette and David Moss scored goals :18 apart to give Phoenix a 2-1 lead.
Steve Ott tied the game for the Sabres in the second. The Buffalo captain put home his 8th of the season on the power play. Ryan Miller made 38 saves in the victory. The Sabres play at Colorado on Saturday.
