(WKBW) It took eight games but the Buffalo Sabres are finally in the win column. Thomas Vanek and Tyler Ennis both scored shootout goals and Ryan Miller made 41 saves as the Sabres knocked off the New York Islanders 4-3 on Tuesday night. The win moved the Sabres to 1-6-1 on the season.
The Sabres never led against the Islanders. Marcus Foligno tied the game at three late in the third period. He beat Evgeni Nabokov for his first goal of the season at 17:59 of the third. The teams then skated even through overtime and needed a shootout to short things out.
The Islanders Matt Moulson and Sabres Thomas Vanek traded goals in the shootout before Ryan Miller stopped Frans Nielsen in the second round. Tyler Ennis then gave Buffalo a 2-1 shootout lead. The Islanders needed John Tavares to score to extend things but Miller came up with the save to secure the Sabres 4-3 win.
Ennis and Vanek also scored in regulation. Nielsen, Matt Martin and Moulson scored for the Islanders. The Sabres host Vancouver on Thursday night.
On the injury front Sabres forward Zemgus Girgensons left the game in the first period after getting hit in the head with a puck. Girgensons was hit in the side of the head on a shot by Tyler Myers. Trainers rushed to his aid. Girgensons was able to skate off the ice on his own, but did not return. The Sabres expect him to be ok.
