Sabres Lose in Washington

WASHINGTON, DC (WKBW) It was an early test for the Sabres, just four games into the lockout shortened season. The team was coming off back to back losses to Carolina, playing on the road, without their best player, and Buffalo could not do enough to avoid a loss in Washington, 3-2.

The Sabres came into Sunday playing without Thomas Vanek, who was out with a muscle strain. Buffalo would get on the board first on the break out with a nice pass to Tyler Ennis who finished things off on the backhand to score his first on the year. Still in the first, Joel Ward would find the puck on his stick in the slot off of a bounce and would bury his third of the season to tie things up.

In the second, a point shot from John Erskine would deflect in off of a Sabres stick, beating Ryan Miller and putting the Capitals up 2-1.

After a delay of game penalty on the Sabres for shooting the puck out of play, Alexander Ovechkin would blast a one timer home for the 3-1 Capitals lead, and that is all they needed. Despite a Marcus Foligno goal, the Sabres lose 3-2, their third straight loss.

Buffalo now returns home for a Tuesday night home contest with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
