DETROIT, MI - (WKBW) The Buffalo Sabres went scoreless in seven power play opportunities in the season opener and lost to the Red Wings on Wednesday 2-1.

After the Sabres failed to score on 1:31 of a 5-on-3 man advantage Mikael Samuelsson deflected a shot past Ryan MIller to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead in the first period.

36 seconds later Pavel Datsyuk scored to put Buffalo down 2-0.

It stayed a two-goal game until the third period when Sabres rookie Zemgus Girgensons scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game.

Sabres goalie Ryan Miller stopped a second period penalty shot by Cory Emmerton and made 32 saves on the night.

Next up for Buffalo, the home opener against Ottawa on Friday night.
