Tallahassee, FL (WKBW) It was a historic day for the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team. Not only did they play in their first ever NCAA Tournament game, but they won it. But it wasn't easy.
The Bonnies took on the University of Florida Gulf Coast, another first time tourney team. The first half was a back and forth between the 5 and 12 seed.
In the second half, Florida Gulf Coast went on a run, stretching the lead to as many as 11 points. And it could have been the end of the Bonnies. It could've been. Instead, the ladies from Olean came clawing back, all the way to tie things up. It would send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Megan Van Tatenhove would take over. She had 18 points on the day, including some clutch free throws down the stretch.
St. Bonaventure would run away in overtime with this first round game, and win it 72-65.
The Bonnies will play Marist in the second round, who upset the University of Georgia in their game on Sunday.
