ORCHARD PARK, NY (WKBW) - The following are quotes from Buffalo Bills Head Coach Chan Gailey and others after practice Tuesday, August 31.

Head Coach Chan Gailey
Practice – August 31, 2010

On how RB Marshawn Lynch looked in practice:

Marshawn took quite a few reps out there today and looked good. It didn’t look like there was any residual effect. So, I’m looking forward to watching him Thursday night.

On the reason for LB Kawika Mitchell not being at practice:

He’s got a little issue. We don’t think it’s a big deal. He’s getting it checked out.

On the status of RB Fred Jackson:

Fred did ok. He’s rusty. He hasn’t done much of anything and has a hard time handling the ball completely, but he moved around pretty good. He’s in good shape still. He takes care of himself.

On Thursday night vs. Detroit being the last chance some guys have to make the roster:

There’s some big decisions to be made. There’s a lot still out there and quite a bit will ride on this ball game for a few guys. Not necessarily a lot of the starter guys, but more of the other guys.

On if the starters will see more than a couple of series:

Probably not, unless the plans change between now and then. I don’t see them playing much past the first quarter anyway.

On if he still sees RB Fred Jackson on track to return for the Miami game:

I’m not ready to commit to that. I think that’s a wait and see [for the] Miami deal.

On if T Ed Wang can play Thursday:

No. We’re not trying to get him ready. He doesn’t have a way to grip yet, not that offensive linemen never hold. (laughter) But he has no way to grip.

On if Wang was doing a little more than normal in practice today:

Yeah. We’re trying to get him back in football condition and shape for when that thing does get well.

On his thoughts on RBs Joique Bell and Chad Simpson:

They’ve done a good job. They’re both very unique runners. They have different styles, but they’ve both done a great job. That’s one of those where we’ve got to take a hard look at when we get to Saturday.

On if he would tell tell media if he was keeping five RBs or not:

What do you think? (laughter) I understand you’ve got to ask it, but no.

On the status of S Jairus Byrd:

He’s on track. He hasn’t been able to get out here yet, but he’s on track.

On the status of T Cornell Green:

He’s nursing something he got in the ball game the other night. That will be a game time decision on him.

On if S Jon Corto could be on the PUP list:

Yes. What you just said, who knows.

On the QB rotation for Thursday’s game:

We’ll let you know how that’s going to go on a later date.

On playing Detroit in the regular season:

To be honest with you, when you have a game on a short week like this, you really are doing your basic stuff. You’re not doing anything game planning wise. It kind of works out good for us. We’re just going to go out and run our base stuff on both sides of the ball and on special teams. We didn’t game plan for this game, hardly at all. So, that will be left for the season.

On if special teams is a key for a lot of the guys that are on the bubble:

Yes, very much so.

RUNNING BACK FRED JACKSON
AM Practice – August 31, 2010

On how he felt in practice today:

It’s always good to get back out there. I’m kind of getting a feel for things and just looking at some football. It’s always good to get back out there and be with my teammates.

On if there were things he couldn’t do in practice because of his hand:

I felt like I was able to go full-go, but I still can’t hold the ball in my left hand like I want to with this brace that I have on. I was trying to see how much I could do, but I definitely won’t be able to do that for Thursday.

On if he could catch passes:

I was allowed to catch some. I think the quarterbacks took it easy on my today, but I was able to catch some. I caught as much as possible, using the hand to see what it would feel like. It felt fine during it, so hopefully next week I could come out and do more stuff with it.

On if he’s down to only using a brace:

Yeah. It’s still pretty hard. There’s still a hard cast around it, but it’s not as restrictive as it was with the big [cast] on it. So, we’ll see how it goes next week.

On if he feels there’s a chance he could play in the Miami game:

I feel there’s a 100-percent chance that I could play. It’s just going to come down to how much they want to get me out there and if they want to use me. I still don’t know what the deal is. I think we’ll find out more next week.

On if he’s a fast healer or if drinking milk helped out with the healing process:

I did drink as much milk as possible, but I think I have a high pain tolerance too. I think that has something to do with it, [the doctors] said. If I could deal with it, then I would be able to play. It’s coming along as good as we wanted it to. They said about four weeks and that’s what we’re looking at.

On if he could play the way he wants to play with the cast on his hand:

Not at all because I can’t grip the ball in this. It’s holding my hand in a certain position and to be able hold on to a football, I would have to be able to use it. We’re going to tweak it and see what they could do with it. They have some ideas of what they want to do, and hopefully they can get to it.

On if it’s more strength or pain that’s the problem:

More than anything I would say pain. If I get hit on it, it might bother it a little bit. I haven’t been hit on it yet, so I don’t know how much there would be involved. But right now it’s just about dealing with the pain.

On how his hand is healing:

It’s looking good. They’re still saying [I should be back] by week four, and that’s next week. So, hopefully we can get out there and get on the field.

QUARTERBACK TRENT EDWARDS
Practice – August 31, 2010

On getting his work in fast because of only playing a limited amount on Thursday night:

We’ve got to prepare like it’s a regular season game. We’re still keeping score. We’re still going up…I don’t know how many reps we’re going to get. Chan [Gailey] usually tells us kind of late in the process. I’ll be ready to go however long I’m in there and I need to take it like another game dress rehearsal. I’m putting the pads on, putting the game jersey on and preparing like it’s a regular game.

On going in to this game preparing for a different opponent come opening day:

The Lions are going through the same thing that we’re going through. I don’t know who they’re first regular season game is, but we’re still thinking about the game Thursday night, but it’s still a preseason game. We need to be ready to go week one. There is some decisions to be made still, after this week’s game. So, if we look past this one, we’re going to make those decisions a lot harder. We need to focus on this week’s game, and when the Dolphins come we’ll be ready to go.

On ending the preseason on a high note:

I think we need to stay in rhythm. I talked about that after the game. I feel like I’ve talked about that with you guys a lot. I’m just repeating myself, but we need to stay in rhythm. We need to be executing our offense. We need to be blocking guys. We need to be in the right spot in our routes and be in the right spot in our run game too. If we don’t do that Thursday night, I think we’ll be disappointed with the direction and the progress we’ve made. So, I think we need to make sure we’re still doing that.

On what he wants to clean up in his game:

There’s still throws that I need to make and there’s still plays that need to be run in practice versus different looks. There are coverages we haven’t seen. Our defense runs, for the most part, a variety of different coverages – and we’ve seen a lot with the Redskins and Colts and the Bengals – but there’s still reps we need to get. Chan’s still putting in some plays and just continue to stay in rhythm and making those throws versus those different coverages.

On if he feels like he has a good command of this offense:

I feel like I’ve told you guys this before, it comes with the territory, that the more plays I run, the more reps I get, the more comfortable I’m getting out there. Fortunately, we’re moving the ball, we’re getting first downs and we’re scoring points. That makes my job a lot easier. It’s easy for me to make progress when things are going well. So, we need to, like I said, stay in rhythm, keep going in that direction and continue to put points on the board.
