BUFFALO, NY - (UB) Canisius' Frank Turner hit a jumper in the lane with 1.5 seconds remaining to lift Canisius to a 73-71 victory over Buffalo at Alumni Arena on Tuesday night. It was the second straight heartbreaking home loss for the Bulls.
Buffalo (2-2) led, 71-66, with 1:51 remaining. A pair of free throws by Turner cut the UB advantage to three. The turning point of the game occurred on the ensuing possession when a rarely seen double foul was called on Buffalo's John Boyer (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) and Canisius' Robert Goldsberry. Canisius was awarded the ball and tied the game on a Greg Logans' three-pointer with 1:12 left.
After each team traded possessions, Calvin Betts (Rochester,
NY/Rush-Henrietta) had a chance to give the Bulls the lead, but his layup with seven seconds remaining danced off the rim. Turner grabbed the rebound and raced down the floor for the game winner.
Canisius (2-1) erased UB's 10-point halftime advantage and took a 54-45 lead with 12:33 left. The Bulls responded with 12-0 scoring run, capped by a Zach Filzen (Northfield, MN/Northfield) jumper in the lane, to regain a
57-54 lead with 7:10 remaining. Filzen scored all of his season-high nine points in the second half.
The sophomore guard was part of a balanced scoring attack that featured seven players scoring seven points or more. Max Boudreau (Montreal, Quebec/Champlain St. Lambert) led the Bulls with 15 points. Rodney Pierce (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) added 11 points and five assists. Titus Robinson (Charlotte, NC/East Mecklenberg) recorded 10 points and eight rebounds.
Canisius was led by Julius Coles who scored 26 points and Turner who added 17 points and 10 rebounds.
"We didn't play well enough to win," head coach Reggie Witherspoon said.
"We didn't play with any consistency. We didn't deserve to win and we lost."
Buffalo will next host Army on Thursday, December 3 at 7:00 pm.
