Zika virus detected in Rochester

According to State Senator Charles Schumer, one person has tested positive for the Zika Virus in Monroe County, Rochester.

Our ABC affiliate in Rochester WHAM is reporting the Monroe County Department of Health Senior Public Health Educator John Ricci says the person was experiencing illness after they reportedly returned from one of the affected countries.

The person was experiencing flu-like symptoms.

The Zika Virus is a mosquito borne virus that affects pregnant women, and can cause birth defects. According to the World Health Organization, the virus is "spreading rapidly" in the Americas.
