You can expect to spend about $69 more a month to drive this summer.

According to AAA, the average prices at the pump could range from $3.01 to $3.21 per gallon through Labor Day. Nationally, prices are expected to range between $2.85 and $3.05 in the same period. Despite the high prices, AAA says drivers will still be out in force for vacations.

"Summer is synonymous with road trips and vacation and we are not going to see Americans are giving up this pastime this year," said Elizabeth Carey, AAA WCNY director of public relations.

According to a AAA survey, only about 25% of people in the Northeast are going to change their summer travel plans if gas prices stay above $3.00/gal. But up to 39% say if prices top $3.50, they may start rethinking their plans.

Fortunately, there are some things you can do to save money without cutting a trip out of your summer plans.

"The higher gas prices may just encourage travelers to shorten their driving distance," Carey said. "Others may pinch pennies by eating out less or finding more free family-fun activities while on vacation."

And while you're getting ready for vacation, there are some simple tricks to help you save on gas. AAA says you should do the following:

  • Observe the speed limit. Not only is it safer, it can help you save money.
  • Lose the weight. The heavier your car, the more fuel it uses.
  • Accelerate gradually. Avoid jackrabbit starts.
  • Drive during cooler parts of the day. Cooler, denser air can boost power and mileage.
  • Maintain recommended tire pressure. Low pressure reduces fuel economy and can damage tires.
