Two people in their 80s were trapped inside their home when a fast moving fire broke out in Genesee County.

The blaze began around 2 a.m. Friday at 6920 Caswell Road in Byron. Authorities were called when a neighbor reported seeing flames in the living room.

"Flames coming out of the windows and doors," described Byron Fire Chief Charles Durkee.

Fire crews battled to get them out, rescuing 84-year-old Norine Leaton. But crews were forced to flee the home because of the intense flames.

Norinewas taken to United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia for smoke inhalation. She is currently in crtical condition in the ICU. Her husband was also trapped.

"We had one fatality. The other person got out and was talk," Chief Durkee said.

The fire chief says the man died of smoke inhalation.

Efforts to battle the fire were hampered by a pour water supply. Firefighters ran out of water several times because crews depend on tanker trucks to haul water to the scene.

The home is a total loss. It will be demolished after fire investigators from Genesee County and the state complete their investigation into the cause.
