What does it take to design a New Era cap?

Ever wonder who designed your favorite Buffalo Bills hat?

The mastermind could be having a cup of coffee next to you right now.

New Era’s design team works out of the world headquarters on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo.

“You have to know what's relevant at the moment and what could be relevant and trending in 2019 or 2020,” said Leonardo Rodriguez.

Rodriguez has been a cap designer for about two years.

“My background is in retail and graphic design,” he explained. He’s one of about a dozen designers in Buffalo. He doesn't just work on one hat at a time. He designs multiple caps on a daily basis.

“One thing a designer has to be good at is multitasking,” Rodriguez added. “I could be doing super bowl caps in the morning and then NBA caps in the afternoon.”

Rodriguez said the job has its pressures. But, ultimately it’s his passion.

“To be able to say that I design New Era hats is a dream come true.”
