Thousands of people from across Western New York took part in Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday.

A parade through the Town of Tonawanda and the Village of Kenmore is one of the largest Memorial Day commemorations in Western New York.  The parade featured bands, service organizations, dance groups, and fire departments.  The annual event honors war veterans, living and dead.

On Grand Island, a service was held at the Charles DeGlopper Memorial Park.  DeGlopper, a Western New York native, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his efforts in World War II.  DeGlopper died during the Battle of Normandy.

In Williamsville, a remembrance ceremony was held at the George Lamm American Legion Post Monument on Main Street.  The event is held in partnership with the LAMM and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts.

In Buffalo, hundreds of flags were placed at the tomb stones of American soldiers buried at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo.  A poignant ceremony was held, which began with a prayer for America’s war dead.
