Dead Man's Check
NEW YORK - Two New York City men won't face charges for wheeling a dead friend to a store to cash his Social Security check. They say they didn't know he was dead when they left for the store, and prosecutors can't say exactly when he died. The men say they were distraught over the loss of their long-time friend. The story generated several references to the movie "Weekend at Bernie's" when it made news in January. The men had been charged with forgery, criminal possession of a forged instrument, attempted larceny and improper disposal of a body. Charges were dismissed yesterday. |
