A wanted Dunkirk man is behind bars after he lead police on a chase.

The Dunkirk Police Department says the incident began around 11:30 Tuesday night, when they pulled over a car on Lake Shore Drive East near Armadillo Street for a traffic violation.

Officers found Walter Duprey, who was wanted for several counts of felony robbery, hiding under a blanket in the back seat.

When police tried to arrest him, he climbed to the front seat, locked the doors, and told the driver to take off.

Dunkirk Police called in backup, and were able to unlock the car, and shut off the engine.

Duprey then took off running, leading police on a short foot chase.

Village of Fredonia Police, SUNY Fredonia University Police and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office all helped catch him on Pangolin Street near Pine Street.

They brought him in, and charged him with felony robbery, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Police say he dropped a bag of cocaine on the floor of the car during the traffic stop.

Duprey is currently housed in Dunkirk City Lockup.
