WEST SENECA (WKBW) It was an Olympic-sized viewing party, as friends and family of Matt Anderson gathered to watch the West Seneca native and Team USA Volleyball's first game of the London Olympics.
"Just unbelievable. I thought the opening ceremonies would be the best experience with my goosebumps and excitement, but today when he walked out in his uniform ready to play it was amazing. Totally amazing," Matt's older sister Joelle Vanegas said.
And his biggest fan is of course his mother, Nancy Anderson, who watched intently while going through a broad range of emotions as she cheered on her son.
"I'm so happy and proud to be his mother and to be a part of his family. That is what I am. It is wonderful," Nancy said.
Anderson led Team USA with sixteen kills in the opening match, as Team USA beat Serbia in game one of group play.
"It's a little bit surreal. It's wonderful, it is just wonderful. I know he is capable of doing all of it and he is. It's just unbelievable," Matt's mom said.
Among those beaming with pride was Gary Capage, who introduced Matt to the game of volleyball when he was 14.
"To be that good that quick is amazing. It's a dream, and I know he's living the dream and that's the great part of it," Capage said.
Matt Anderson was even trending on Twitter during the afternoon match.
"I guess that means that everyone across the world is looking at Matt Anderson and that is unreal because he is my baby brother," Vanegas said.
And a mother's message for her Olympic son? It is plain and simple.
"I love you and keep going and have fun," Nancy Anderson said.
Team USA's next match is Tuesday, when they face Germany in pool play.
