BUFFALO, NY ( WKBW ) Mother's Day is a day to take time out to honor mom. And on Sunday, Western New Yorkers celebrated the day in a variety of ways.
It started with the Mother's Day Walk-a-thon along the North Forest bike path in Amherst.
Umesh Babaria is one of the organizers of the walk. "Mothers do so much for the children, for families, for the community in general. And there's no better day to salute the contributions and efforts of mothers all over the world than Mother's Day," he said.
Some of the money raised benefits the Family Justice Center of Erie County, which helps victims of domestic violence. The remaining money will be donated to various other charities.
The celebrating continued with Mother's Day with the animals, as the Buffalo Zoo celebrated moms and had events for the whole family, including a sheep shearing.
"I think it will be a nice experience, a nice way for kids to have fun as well as moms, to share in memories and see things they normally wouldn't at the zoo because of this event," Katie Jordan, Event Coordinator for the Zoo, said Sunday.
And don't forget the flowers. Moms were treated to free admission at the Erie County Botanical Gardens in Lackawanna. For members of the Stamm family, it's a long standing Mothers Day tradition.
"We have my grandmother who just turned 90, my mom, me, and my children. So there's four generations here today," Jennifer Stamm said, "especially coming to the Botanical Gardens and all the beautiful flowers for Mother's Day, it's just a great time and a great day to spend here."
So whether it was walking for a cause, having a wild time, or just smelling the roses, it was all to say "Happy Mother's Day" to all the moms out there.
