Cheektowaga, NY (WKBW) - 'Tis the season ... When you look around the mall, there are already signs that the holiday is fast approaching!
Local malls say they expect sales to double or even triple in the upcoming months.
Major stores are already putting on sales this weekend for Columbus Day and Canadian Thanksgiving.
This comes as the mall sees more shoppers coming from across the border, including Rabiaya Wasif and Abdul Siddiqui.
Rabiaya says "There's great deals here like 40-50 percent off. Like today, I got a Ralph Lauren shirt for about $20 instead of $70 or $80."
Mall representatives tell Eyewitness News they are already seeing more and more Canadians cross the border.
Rabiaya and Abdul bought so much, they had to put their bags in the car and come back for a second round.
Some Canadian shoppers say it's all because of currency -- they're getting more bang for their buck here in the U.S.
Those numbers are only going to go up as the holidays get closer.
Rabiaya and Abdul plan to come back and that they will "definitely will be bringing my kids at some point. I don't know when but for sure."
More shoppers cross the border isn't the only economic boost expected.
Thousands of seasonal jobs come into play.
Macy's alone is hiring hundreds of people between now and mid-January.
Roseann Gambino says "every year it seems to be getting higher and higher so we're excited about hitting 700 this year."
One of the big perks, some of these jobs can turn into permanent jobs and big help for Western New York's workforce ... And for many jobs it fits right into the holiday spirit.
Mall representatives also say changes in the duty free customs allowances are bringing more shoppers into the U.S. and that is expected to bring an extra holiday boost.
