(Elma, NY) Tuesday evening around 8pm, volunteer firefighters from Spring Brook Fire District in Elma responded to a car accident on Route 400 near Jamison Road.
Veteran firemen Jim Stevenson and Bob Schiffman were directing traffic when they spotted a car speeding towards them and out of control.
Bob Schiffman jumped out of the way and yelled a warning to his partner Jim Stevenson. With no time to react, Stevenson was hit and thrown by a 2009 Mazda four door sedan.
41-year old Jim Stevenson, who is a third generation fireman for the Spring Brook Fire District, was taken to E.C.M.C with hip and leg injuries. He was treated and released on Wednesday.
"Relieved . . . relieved that it wasn't more serious," says Spring Brook Fire Chief Richard Dzubella.
21-year old Kyle Patterson from Buffalo was issued a variety of summons including speeding, failure to stay in a lane, and not exercising due care. He is also the first person ticketed by Erie County Sheriff's for violating the State's new "Move Over Law."
The "Move Over Law" requires motorists to switch lanes and slow down when approaching parked emergency vehicles with flashing lights. It went into effect on January 1st.
Violators are fined $275 and have points added to their license.
