NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WKBW) Responding to complaints by residents that there is new contamination coming from the Love Canal, both the US Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Health have issued comments to Eyewitness News.
Following City of Niagara Falls sewer repair work in the area surrounding the Love Canal containment facility, some area residents questioned whether the facility containment system is working properly. DEC routinely inspects the property and monitors the on-going long-term operation and maintenance of the site. EPA is confident that there have been no releases from the site and the collection and treatment system is performing as designed.
Some residents have raised concerns that there may be contamination at their properties from past activities at Love Canal. EPA, DEC and DOH reviewed all available information provided by these residents, and had follow-up discussions with their consultants, the City of Niagara Falls Water Board, OCC and its consultants, and the residents themselves. In addition, EPA has conducted air sampling in the home of one of the concerned residents. EPA and DEC met with residents and explained that the EPA, DEC and DOH review of the results from EPA's air sampling, as well as all the environmental data provided by the residents, showed contaminant levels to be below established levels of concern.
EPA would be happy to review any additional sampling data or information area residents may generate that they believe indicates contaminant levels of
NYS Department of Health:
Beginning in 1996, DOH conducted a series of studies that focused on a review and analysis of residents' causes of death, cancer, and reproductive outcomes, as well as their potential exposure to canal chemicals - over the previous 20 years. In the event current residents have concerns about their health, the Department recommends they contact their family physician or health care provider to discuss their concerns, and suggest they review the study findings independently and with their doctor. These studies provide relevant data and information about selected impacts potentially related to Love Canal during the period of concern.
