LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WKBW) Diabetic Alert Dogs are trained to use their smell to detect if there is a problem with a diabetic child's blood sugar level.
The dogs are matched specially to the children they help and will follow them where ever they go, even to school.
For parents, the animals provide peace of mind during nighttime hours because the Alert Dogs are trained to wake up sleeping adults is there if a problem.
Owen McIntyre from Lockport was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and his family is now trying to find a way to purchase one of the special dogs.
"I pray every night that somehow, someway we'll be able to afford this dog," said Owen's mother Andrea McIntyre.
The McIntyre's are hoping that they can hold fundraisers to help pay for the cost.
