BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) Online videos showing people fighting are nothing new to the internet, but what is new, more of them are being recorded in Buffalo.
With several new street fighting videos being posted each month to websites like YOUTUBE, community leaders are concerned that it could cause more violence.
"Once you post it, people want to get even, if they are on the losing side. That can bring in other people . . . into what was a small street fight. It does enlarge it," says Ellicott District councilman and pastor, Rev. Darius Pridgen.
In some cases, the street fight video could actually record a crime being carried out.
"It is evidence for us. If we can locate one of these videos, and can identify people who are participating in a crime, we can use it to prosecute someone," adds Captain Gregory Savage from the Erie County Sheriff's Office.
"If there is physical injury, it could be an assault. If there is serious physical injury, it could be a felony assault. It could be a harrassment"
While the videos reflect a population that is fascinated with violence in movies and television, for victims, being beat up and having it posted online can be devastating.
"Some people will use this to their benefit and will harass them," comments Rev. Pridgen.
He advises victims of any online posting to consult with someone they trust, such as a minister or school counselor.
Police say if you feel a crime was committed, contact your local law enforcement.
