A senior citizen was scammed out of $4,000, City of Tonawanda Police say.

The victim reportedly received a call that "his granddaughter was in a car accident while on her cell phone and the vehicle she struck had no insurance and she needed $4,000 to be released from police custody."

They were instructed to get four $1,000 gift cards from Sam's Club and call back.  The senior complied with the request and called the number back with the numbers on the card and pin.

Officials say police were called and detectives tried to follow up, but the number was already out of service.

An investigation is ongoing.
