Thunderstorms could bring down trees across WNY

It’s the busiest time of year for Greg’s Tree Services. Owner Gregory Sojka said hundreds of calls a week are coming in for branch and tree removal across Western New York.

“Everybody pretty much going 7 days a week right now,” Sojka said.

Sojka expects a number of calls to pour in tonight as thunderstorms roll into the area.

“Right now trees are at their heaviest. They grab the most amount of wind. They hold the most amount of rain and that combination will tear them apart,” Sojka said.

That’s something Bennie Gascia is concerned about. Gascia lives on Prospect Avenue in Buffalo. He heard this large branch fall from a tree across the street on Tuesday.

He worries about the dead trees in his neighborhood potentially hurting someone.

“They should be treated by the city. The city should check them. There could be a tragedy some day,” Gascia said.

Buffalo’s Division of Parks and Recreation said it received 40 calls about down trees and branches on Tuesday. Crews are working to get to every 311 call to the City of Buffalo.

Meanwhile Sojka is bracing for what could be a long night.
