The $20 million project to create ice rinks at Canalside is complete, and “The Ice at Canalside” is set to open Thursday night.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m., there will be a free public skate, including free skate rentals, as the holiday tree is lit. Santa will make an appearance and fireworks will be launched to celebrate the completion of the rinks, which are bigger than two NHL rinks under three unique bridges.

The Ice at Canalside will feature ice bikes for rent beginning Friday, as well as other winter activities like curling and broom ball along with holiday music and food, including warm nuts, hot cocoa, cold craft beer and pretzels.

The rinks will be open throughout the winter months and are kept cold with more than 70 miles of refrigerated piping. In the summer, the canals will be open for family-friendly activities.

Ground is expected to break soon on the new home of the Explore and More Children's Museum.
