Free Swine Flu Shots for Students

Buffalo State College is offering the swine flu vaccine to students this week but there are not enough doses for everyone. Buffalo State has 12,000 students and in this first round of vaccinations on campus the college can only take care of 1,600 students. Those deemed most at risk are the priority and that includes students with asthma, heart problems or other medical conditions.

Some students were surprised to find a relatively short line to get the vaccine on Tuesday. "It was so quick," says Buffalo State graduate student Amanda Boos, "I was expecting like a huge line going all the way out the student union because I figured who wouldn't take advantage of this, but no, that was five minutes. Done."

The Centers for Disease Control says more and more Americans are resisting getting the H1N1 vaccine. Some question whether it was tested enough before being given to the public. "I feel like if there were really something wrong with it they wouldn't be giving it to us. At least I would hope they wouldn't be giving it to us," says Boos.

"I was a little worried about it but better to preventative I think than getting it in the long run," says Buffalo State freshman Molly Lundquist.

"There certainly is a lot of misconception out there. The whole thing about the vaccine not being safe, it causes the flu, is incorrect. It's almost the same vaccine that the seasonal flu vaccine is," says Buffalo State's acting medical director Dr. Margaret McAloon.

Even though Buffalo State College health officials don't test students who come into their health center with flu symptoms they do believe H1N1 is spreading across campus because they're seeing a lot more flu-like illnesses than normal for this time of year. "Beginning of October every one of my friends was sick," says Buffalo State Freshman Nicholas Tomasello.

Some students aren't bothering to get the vaccine but the ones stopping by the campus clinic believe it's worth it. "My sister just recently had two children and I want to make sure I'm not getting sick for their sake too," says Lundquist.

"In January I'm going to be starting work at a middle school in West Seneca and because I'm going to working with a lot of children I figured it's better safe than sorry," says Boos.

Buffalo State College is hosting one more swine flu clinic this week for students only. It's this Thursday afternoon from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the student union.
